Following is the building proposal formed by a committee and passed by the congregation on September 3, 2006. With much prayer, a combined meeting of elders and deacons has authorized a committee to draft the following proposal. The officers have recommended building a new sanctuary adjacent to the current fellowship hall. The new building would contain seating for approximately 120-150 people, restrooms, foyer, and a drive-under entrance. (see drawings and model) Arrangements have been made to extend the current church property for adequate space by the generosity of Charles Newland. The cost of expansion would be handled in phases of construction. The first phase, the exterior phase, would cost approximately $120,000. An overall cost of completion would be approximately $240,000. The specifics of design and materials will be determined by a building committee. It is understood that at no time would construction begin until the funds for phase one have been received. Gifts from God's people will be the only source for the funds for this project. There will be no fund raising; we will depend solely on free-will donations apart from the budget. These gifts will be placed in a new building fund under the oversight of the deacons. Arcadia Presbyterian Church has been a witness to God's provision in the past, and its members are looking to His provision for the future. The recommendation to build was based upon the following criteria: 1. The current usage of the existing sanctuary. Over the past months, church attendance has been approximately 75% of comfortable capacity (90 seats). 2. The condition of the existing sanctuary. Much work is needed to continue using this building. Structural problems with the floor system are in need of repair. There is the need for new windows. The steeple must be removed or replaced because of a persistent leak. The general repair of walls, pew replacement and remodeling of the entrance area are needed also. An estimate of $50,000 to $75,000 would be needed. 3. The current facility was evaluated as to its handicap access, general appeal to visitors, and usefulness for the family. In all areas, improvements are needed. The officers of the church have suggested the current sanctuary be remodeled to house two large classrooms. Some of the needed repairs will still have to be done. The estimated cost of repairs would be approximately $15,000 to $20,000. A congregation meeting will be held next Sunday to vote upon this proposal. The proposal committee desires that at least 80% of the congregation's members in attendance approve this proposal. Please pray for God's leading in this matter. Prayerfully submitted on August 27, 2006. Proposal committee members: Charles Newland, Steve Johnson, Johnny Christian, Carolyn Carter, Bernice Johnson, Mary Alice Kinsler, Ken Strickland, and John Irwin (advisory member). Note: This proposal was passed overwhelming with only one "no" vote recorded. |
